General idea about Thaats and Ragas

Thaats and Ragas -

 Ragas are based on Thaats.Thaat has a specific set of Notes i. e different combination of Suddh and Komal Notes. It is parental scale.The Ragas under these ten categories are -

(1) Bilawal Thaat-  Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni Sa*(All Suddh Notes)
     - Bilawal,Alhaiya Bilawa, Durga, Hansdhvani, Mand, Shankara etc.
  
(2) Khamaaj Thaat- Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni# Sa*(Only 'Ni' Komal).
     - Khamaaj, Desh, Jhanjhoti, Gara, Tilak Kamod, Jayjayvanti

(3) Kafi Thaat- Sa Re Ga# Ma Pa Dha Ni# Sa*('Ga' and 'Ni'  Komal)
     - Kafi, Shivranjani, Bageshri, Bahar, Bhimpalasi, Vrindavani Sarang, Piloo, Megh, Malhar etc. 

(4) Asavari Thaat- Sa Re Ga# Ma Pa Dha# Ni# Sa*('Ga'  'Dha'  'Ni' Komal)
     - Asavari, Darbari Kanhada, Jaunpuri etc.

(5) Bharavi Thaat- Sa Re# Ga# Ma Pa Dha# Ni# Sa*('Re'  'Ga'  'Dha'  'Ni'  Komal)
- Bhairavi, Malkauns etc

(6) Bhairav Thaat- Sa Re# Ga Ma Pa Dha# Ni Sa*('Re'  'Dha'  Komal)
     - Bhairav, Gauri, Lalit, Jogiya, Ramkali etc

(7) Kalyan Thaat- Sa Re Ga Ma' Pa Dha Ni Sa*('Ma'  Tivra )
     -Kalyan, Shuddh Kalyan, Yaman Kalyan, Yaman, Bhopali, Chhayanut, Gaud Sarang etc.

(8) Marwa Thaat- Sa Re# Ga Ma' Pa Dha Ni Sa*('Ma' Tivra  and 'Re' Komal)
     - Marwa, Vibhas, Puriya, Sohani etc

(9) Purvi Thaat-  Sa Re# Ga Ma' Pa Dha# Ni Sa*('Ma' Tivra  and 'Re'  'Dha'  Komal)
     - Purvi, Puriya, Basant, Dhanashri, Shree etc

(10) Todi Thaat- Sa Re# Ga# Ma' Pa Dha# Ni Sa*('Ma' Tivra  'Re'  'Ga'  'Dha'  Komal)
        - Todi, Multani etc

Ragas -      

     Raga means a combination of several notes woven into a composition in a way which is pleasing to the
      ear, is called Raga.
        - Each Raga has its own scale i e. number of Notes. It has specific movement
         in ascending and descending order, specific dominating Vadi (Sonent) and Sam-Vadi
              (Consonent) Notes
       - Each Raaga create different feeling and sentiments.
       - Two Raaga can have the same set of Notes, but different Vadi(Sonant Note) and
              Sam Vadi (Consonent Notes) e.g. Bhopali and Deskar.
        -'Pakad' or 'Mukhada' play important role to recognize a Raga.
        -The Vadi (Sonent) is the Note  that is stressed most in the Raga. The Sam-Vadi is
             stressed after Vadi Note.

Natural Notes- These are White Notes e.g  Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni .
Sharp/Flate Note - These are Black Keys e. g.  Re#,  Ga#,  Ma#  Dha#,  Ni# .
